Strategic Explorations: An Interactive Metacognitive Journal for the Transfer of Executive Function Skills
Rachel Dozier, Lead Elementary Teacher, Acton Academy; Assistant Director of Student Success, Penn GSE
The Secret Society of Strategy Journal aims to significantly enhance Executive Function (EF) and metacognitive skills through an engaging, interactive approach. Drawing on research by Zelazo et al. (2024), Meltzer (2018), and others, it underscores the critical importance of EF skills for overcoming academic and life challenges, particularly for learners facing adversity. This innovative journal introduces 'Metacognitive Mapping,' a unique framework that integrates executive functions with strategic mindset practices and creative expression to deepen learners' understanding and application of EF skills across various contexts. Structured around engaging narratives, the journal presents learners with challenges that stimulate strategic thinking and problem-solving. By engaging in activities that require reflection, imagination, and strategy application, participants develop a robust toolkit of EF-based life skills. This interactive learning process is supported by metacognitive mapping, guiding learners to visualize solutions and reflect on their strategies, thereby enhancing their ability to apply these skills in real-life scenarios.
