Centering Teen Creatives in the Age of AI: Learnings from a Youth Digital Arts Magazine

This interactive workshop shares learnings from a youth-composed AI policy, situated in a teen digital literary and arts magazine. Supported by the youth editorial team, workshop participants will have the opportunity to draft a “plan of action” for co-writing an AI policy with their class, club, or arts collective.

Flight of the Coordinates: Math-Driven Drone Search and Rescue in Fairmount Park

Explore the critical role of drones in search and rescue missions. Learn how to guide students through a unit where they will plot coordinates, calculate areas, and apply their math skills to program drones for simulated rescue missions in an urban park setting. Beyond math, this unit encourages students to think critically about issues such as privacy, equity, and the technological innovation gap, particularly in underrepresented communities.

Socio-Scientific Issues in the Middle School Classroom: Should the U.S. Military Use Drones in Wartime?

Engage in the practices of modeling and engaging in argument from evidence in the context of a socio-scientific issue: Should the U.S. Military Use Drones in Wartime? While this workshop will summarize the unit’s flow, content and summative assessments, our main purpose is skill and strategy practice with knowledge-building and idea synthesis in the classroom. We will also discuss selection, planning, execution, and evaluation of these tasks in collaborative project-based learning settings.

Developing Authentic Literacy Assessments with and for Youth

The presenters share their approach to authentic literacy assessments–defined as teacher-designed tasks that contextualize literacy in real-world dilemmas–to affirm students’ identities and cultivate their ability to interrogate their realities and society. With curriculum samples and student work, the presenters offer two vivid examples: independent reading multimodal projects and writing workshop peer and self- assessments.
