Reimagining Literacy Pedagogy With Generative AI: Shifting Mindsets

Rachel Karchmer-Klein, Associate Professor, University of Delaware; Leigh Hibbard, Graduate Student, University of Delaware; Molly Li, Graduate Student, University of Delaware

Are you unsure of how generative AI (GAI) tools can be used to challenge students to think more deeply about content and application of their literacy skills? The goal of this session is to workshop ideas of how to incorporate GAI and evidence-based comprehension and writing practices in K-12 classrooms.

Room L2

Prompting Deeper Discussions in the Age of AI

Matthew Kay, Educator/Author, Science Leadership Academy

In this interactive session, we will explore how classroom discussion facilitators can lead meaningful conversations about race (and other tough issues) in this current age of generative AI. We’ll use real-time case studies to examine the specific benefits and weaknesses of tools like Chat GPT, specifically its ability to make meaningful discussion prompts. We’ll discuss how AI stands to benefit (or compromise, if we are not careful) our real-time discussion facilitation.

Generative AI-Powered Personalized Writing Instruction That Emphasizes Creativity and Affirms Identity

Daniel Uueda, Educator, Philadelphia

Perhaps the most powerful use case of Generative AI is personalized learning. For writing instruction, there is potential to develop prompts based on student interest, to emphasize creativity while reducing barriers to communication, and to affirm identity. In this workshop, we will dive into personalized writing instruction using Gemini while investigating how we value creativity and syntax as human skills.
